Outdoor Nature Challenge {pt. three}

Challenge #3 was about collecting things for our nature journals {my hoarders united!!} & also still practicing our listening skills. We found a new location to venture to this week. The beautiful Oxley Nature Center, a place that will provide us HOURS of exploring. We started collecting and then we would have to start our collections over again because we found ourselves getting distracted {say by the deer tracks or the bat houses}.
We also talked about the word nocturnal and animals that we might discover. We used our magnifying glasses to get up close and observe. Thanks to Sid the Science Kid we tend to use the words observation and discover a little to much. I was smart enough to bring the tape with me and we happened to find the perfect little bench under a great tree in the middle of a field! {how perfect for nature study}As is usually the case in Oklahoma, so I'm learning, it was windy but we worked together and got our collections secured into our nature journals. By far this has been their favorite week. Getting to pick things up and safely put them in their journals and then bring the items home was fabulous. {we did ask permission to take items}
I'm telling you my hoarders united!!

We still need to write in our journals. My goal is to get them at least copying what I write to label what they have discovered. We will start with the basic names: leaf, stick, pebble but some fine day when writing is easier and our knowledge is greater we will write the scientific name! Oh what plans I have for my little hoarders :)

Found you from the Handbook of Nature Study blog - you look like you have such a fun and happy homeschool. I love it!

I also really like your list of 100 things to do before you're 30. I have my own bucket list I've been working through (though I'm a few years past 30 now!)

This looks like another successful outing and you now have a place to put your treasures. I think your relaxed building up to more complete nature journal entries is a great way to go.

Keep up their enthusiasm! Love to see your progress!
